It's been over a year since this commercial about Windows running on a Mac was all over televisions, but I've yet to walk into an Apple store and see a Mac running Windows Vista or Windows XP. I still don't think it's common knowledge that people can simply install XP or Vista on their Mac's either. Or they could just buy one from MacMall.com or other retailers with is pre-installed.
I was in an Apple Store today (which was still crowded with people despite the economy) and there was someone who walked in and almost immediately started talking to a sales rep. It became clear to me that this was going to be their first Apple Computer and they were concerned about the switch from "PC" to Mac, but the sales rep started by touting all the great features of OS X. I never even heard a whisper about Bootcamp or installing Windows or just transferring everything from the Windows machine to the new Macbook Pro.
It's pretty clear to me that the entire lineup of Macbooks, Macbook Pros, and Mac Pros are substantially more stylish and have fairly good specs. There's always the question of just how much extra you're paying for this and the ability to run the Mac OS without violating the EULA, but there's plenty of people happy to pay a couple hundred extra to get that shiny Mac. Why not continue to emphasize just how great the Mac is as a Windows PC?
I saw the movie Sex Drive yesterday and wasn't expecting much, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought. This movie is about a young man who feels like he has a chance to get some with someone he's met online and his adventure. While the one liner explanation seems like it might not be much, the story and characters were extremely well flushed out. In fact, there was a lot more original twists and turns than I expected. The story also managed to go right to the edge of wacky in parts without taking it over that line and closes every little plot line that opens.
This was a surprise for me and it was a really good movie. This is obviously not a flick you'll want to watch sitting next to your parents, but it's got plenty of heart as well. I'm really trying to figure out what I didn't like about this movie, but I'm not sure what to complain about. It's kind of unfortunate because this movie had some really horrible ads on the radio for it, but it's really much more like the trailer. Also, the trailer doesn't give everything away so you'll still have things to look forward to if you watch it.
I received the email below from Netflix a couple days ago and went on a rant with a couple friends about it, but I wanted to share those thoughts and this email with everyone else as well...
I completely understand why Netflix would having a price change for true HD content. However, I feel like it's bad form to work in this change after already going live with this content. With that being said, I also understand that sometimes it's easy to lack this foresight. Or maybe they could have done it on purpose to get me hooked to the idea of getting a blu-ray in the mail.
Anyway, what I'm really more frustrated with here is the idea that they're going to charge for "access" to potentially get a blu-ray in the month for a given month. For one, this doesn't mean that I'm assured to get a blu-ray disc since everything isn't available and it doesn't mean that they'll stock pile blu-rays so they're more available than the DVD counterpart. I suppose they could spend the extra dollars for that, but I find it unlikely.
That brings me into my second point which is potentially even more of an issue for me. A flat rate charge of $1 to everyone no matter what level of plan they have is just silly. Why should the guy that gets 1 DVD or blu-ray at a time pay the same $1 extra as the guy that gets 5 DVDs or blu-rays at a time. Shouldn't this be a percentage increase added to the scale instead? Shouldn't you charge more to the customer that potentially can get more blu-rays in a given month?
I know I'm nitpicking a bit, but this thing just came across to me in the wrong way. DVDs were just as expensive as blu-rays before Blu-rays were on the scene and Netflix has always tried to be very competitive with their pricing structure. This just seems to stray completely off in a different direction. It's not a huge thing, but it just leaves me a little confused.
"Dear Jeffrey,
As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive than standard definition movies. As a result, we're going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your monthly membership charge, for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies.
The additional charge for unlimited Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details. If you wish to continue getting Blu-ray movies for $1 a month more, you don't need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account at the Netflix website.
If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-638-3549.
I just got back from seeing an early screening of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. This movie is filled with twists and turns as a group of friends try to find where their favorite band is doing a surprise show. This functions as a subplot to keep the movie full of plenty of action and laughs. The remainder of the story wraps around Nick and Norah's meeting early in the film and what happens with them throughout one crazy night.
I really enjoyed the movie and would definitely recommend it. If you're tight on money, just wait for the DVD. Let's just be honest; it's a good movie, but it's not going to do Batman numbers and will probably be available in your Netflix queue in 3 months. The acting in this movie is fantastic as well. Everyone in this movie should have some great careers ahead of them.
Wow, I've really ignored you lately LiveJournal. I'll make it a point to blog more often starting this evening... I'll be watching Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist tonight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0981227/) and I'll try to write up a quick review after the movie.
Today on MLK's bday, I'm celebrating by working. :P Seriously though, I'm glad that MLK made such a huge influence along with all the thousands of other unrecognized people that also helped the fight. Happy bday my brother!
Hopefully we can all be completely free of all the -isms someday and just live in peace with one another, but it's our human nature to notice our similarities, differences and bond with people that we relate to more than others... But before we just judge people for their beliefs, color, sex, sport team choice, sport choice or whatever else, we all have to realize that we will live, work, breathe, eat, pay taxes and die right alongside these very people we may despise because of their choices.
It's in our differences that we'll discover our likeness. Look past our differences and embrace our similarities.
My friend, Ingel, is in this and it's pretty cool too. :) I saw The Grouch at the afterparty for the 2002 (I think) IMYTA. It was a great show and Jon Julio let me go chill in the VIP room with free drinks and stuff. Fun stuff!
Hehe.. I remember when Jaren Grob came up and hit on the girl I was with at the time. LOL!
Ironically that video of Jaren that I linked to I had saw at another IMYTA afterparty a year before or something... :P I love skating!
If you can, on Friday, November 10th I highly recommend being HERE. It'll be a big event.
I found the below posted as some comment on some page, somewhere and I have no idea where this originally came from, but it made me cry with laughter so it only seems right to pass it on... This is the reason www.myspace.com/havenskate will always be simple...

If Real Life was like MySpace...
Tila Tequila would know everyone in the whole world.
19 year old boys wouldn't own shirts and 19 year old girls would not own pants.
If you're a fat girl, people would only see you from the shoulders up.
People would be able to photoshop out pimples on their face.
Girls would always be posing, cheeks sucked in and lips puckered two feet off their face.
Your attraction to someone would be based on their favorite clothing label, their favorite band, and a survey.
All females are bi and all males drive import muscle cars.
Most people would walk around with a full size mirror 2 feet in front of them.
Your driver's license would have hearts around your name or quote from an emo song.
It would be perfectly acceptable to blurt out any random filthy perverse sexual thought at any random woman/man you thought was "hawt" as a first greeting.
You would look your very best at all times.
Some people would be holding their right arm out straight in front of them at all times.
Everyone would make $100,000 a year or higher.
There would be alot of underage strippers in the world
There would be a lot of youthful looking 99 year olds.
You would have to paint your walls using Thomas Myspace Editor codes in your apartment.
When someone said something funny, you'd actually roll around on the floor and laugh your ***** ass off.
At nights when you are asleep you would get people running in your room that you don't know saying. "It's 4 a.m., I can't sleep, someone talk to me."
Bands go to your house and ask you to give them a listen because they see that you like a band they sound nothing like.
Anytime you walk into someones house they have the same video or song playing all the time, non-stop for three months straight.
People would run up to you, tell you a random message, and you'd have 17 minutes and 13 seconds to pass it along before a ghost came to your house and raped your dog.
People would inexplicably be stuck in their homes for hours unable to communicate with the out side world because some asshole put up a large white wall in front of every door and window with a note attached saying Sorry but an unexpected error has occurred.
So, I'm about to go all in on one of the biggest decisions I'll make in my life... I'm buying my first property and moving out of my parents house for the first time. I'm 27 so it's well past time to move out, but up until now I wouldn't have been able to afford a home -- granted that even now the home I'm getting is just big enough for myself and maybe a significant other. It's a good first step and I'll be using a huge chunk of my savings (basically all of it -- with a little reserve just in case) to get in... I'm excited about this and I've already began to buy stuff for the place in addition to the stuff I've been getting as gifts for years from my parents for that big day when I moved out.
anyway, i have more thoughts, but i think that's enough to write here..
